The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation (FR for short) were officially formed in May 1992 and are seen as the heir to the combat traditions and achievements of the Soviet armed forces. Currently, they are recognized as the second most powerful armed forces in the world, second only to US forces. In 2013, the Russian air force numbered approximately 150,000 soldiers. It is also assumed that in 2012 they included 38 fighter squadrons, 15 bomber squadrons, 14 squadrons of assault machines and 9 reconnaissance squadrons - a total of 76 air squadrons. It is worth adding, however, that until now this number could have changed significantly. Russian aviation is still based on designs dating back to the times of the USSR. Examples include MiG-29, Su-27, Su-25 or Tu-22 planes. At the same time, however, these machines are being intensively modernized, and in addition, the line includes very modern planes such as the Su-34 attack aircraft or the Su-35 multi-role fighter. Until recently, Russia also carried out work on the fifth generation fighter called PAK-FA, but officially this work was completed without introducing the machine to the full scale.
