Aerobonus 480001 SPPU-22 Soviet gun pods

The SPPU-22 was a Soviet, and is now a Russian, Cold War and Modern Suspended Gun Pod. The length of the hopper is 380 cm with a diameter of 400 millimeters. The weight of the loaded container is 320 kg. Serial production of the SPPU-22 started in the 1970s and it entered service in the same period. It is still used by the armed forces of the Russian Federation. The SPPU-22 was and is still used to carry the GSz-23L double-barrel cannon with 260 rounds of ammunition. The hopper has a long shape with nice aerodynamic properties. As a standard, the cannon placed in it shoots straight ahead, but the pilot can control the angle of fire by about 30 degrees vertically. It is assumed that the effective range of the shot is approx. 2,000 meters. The GSz-23L cannon is dedicated primarily to incapacitating enemy manpower and lightly armored vehicles. Interestingly, the SPPU-22 container can be carried by such planes as, for example, Su-17 or Su-25, but it cannot be carried by helicopters.
