The ADM-20 Quail (another designation: GAM-72) was an American air-to-air missile used for radio-electronic warfare and jamming enemy radar stations. The missile entered production in 1957 and was put into production in 1960. The mass of the missile was approximately 540 kilograms, its length was 3.88 m, with a diameter of 0.64 meters. The propulsion was provided by a single General Electric J85-GE-7 turbojet engine with a thrust of 10.9 kN. The missile's operational range was approximately 720 kilometers.
Design work on the ADM-20 Quail began in 1955 with the main goal of creating a guided missile with a long range as possible, the main task of which was to attract the attention of Soviet anti-aircraft defense, thus distracting it from the actual B-47 bombers and B-52s that would be aiming at their targets in the USSR at the same time. The McDonnell Aircraft plant was primarily responsible for the development of the structure and its subsequent production. Finally, ADM-20 Quail missiles were only carried by B-52 machines. The ADM-20 Quail missiles were definitely withdrawn from service in the USAF in 1978, but from the beginning of the 1970s they were perceived as ineffective.
