The “High sea patrol submarines” of the Redoutable class, also known as “1,500 toners” were the largest class of submarines built for the French Navy in the Interwar Years.
Thirty-one boats were commissioned between 1928 and 1937. They were considered very good units and served during the Second World War, during which they paid an heavy tribute.
Only six survived the War. Nine had been sunk in operation, two by accident and fourteen had been scuttled, including six in Toulon.
The most famous was Casabianca, who, under Cdt l’Herminier, escaped the Toulon scuttling in November, 1942 to become a special ops sub to land intelligence, weapons, radios and commandos on the Corsica and Provence coasts in 1943-44. Resin parts, photo etched parts, length: 230mm.
